Natalie Firmino, PhD (c) (UBC), BSc

Math and Science Specialist

Natalie spent most of her childhood in Kitimat, BC, but also attended middle school and a portion of high school in Portugal. As a result, she is familiar with the challenges students may face with changing school systems, but believes these can be overcome, as she was able to top her high school’s Dean’s list upon her return to Canada.

Natalie followed her early interest in science with an undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia, where she majored in Microbiology and Immunology. During this time, Natalie decided to pursue a career in scientific research, which she began through a series of co-op placements and undergraduate research projects at the BC Cancer Research Centre. Natalie is currently working towards her PhD at the Cancer Research Center under the supervision of Dr. Kevin Bennewith, where she studies how the physiological and cellular tumor microenvironment promote cancer metastasis.

Natalie enjoys communicating her passion for science through oral presentations to research colleagues and high school students alike. Her favorite subjects are biology and physics, and she is excited to help students develop their critical thinking skills through tutoring math and science.

When not in the lab, you can find Natalie riding her bike around Vancouver, or hiking one of the local mountains.
