Janet Holthuysen

Janet is a life-long resident of Vancouver, where she attended the University of British Columbia for her undergraduate and professional degrees, earning her Bachelor of Arts (Philosophy) in 2004 and her Bachelor of Laws in 2007.

Prior to practicing law for several years at a top tier, international law firm in Vancouver, Janet provided a successful private tutoring service for students ranging from junior high to university level, teaching a variety of subjects, with a focus on exam preparation and study skills. While Janet enjoyed the academic challenge and excitement of her legal practice, she has always harboured a passion for teaching. She credits her interest in education to her mother, a former elementary school teacher, who instilled in her the belief that good learning habits and a good education provide invaluable life opportunities and a path to success.

Janet strongly believes in the importance of community service and has volunteered in a number of capacities throughout the last decade. She has acted in a mentorship capacity for numerous law students and prospective law students both informally and through the Canadian Bar Association, providing advice on exam preparation, course selection, resume preparation and the interview process. She has provided free assistance to economically disadvantaged high school, college and university students preparing scholarship applications and entrance applications to various post-secondary school programs. While completing school herself, Janet taught Biology, English and Law to young mothers in Tupper Secondary School’s Young Parent Program. Janet has also volunteered extensively as a teacher’s helper at her son’s elementary school and served on the school’s Parent Advisory Council.

In her free time, Janet likes relaxing and travelling with her family. Her current hobbies include cooking and reading with her son Ethan. Janet has also achieved her Grade X Royal Conservatory in piano, and enjoys playing classical music.

Janet specializes in English and English Literature at all levels, and particularly enjoys working with students on the AP English Language and AP English Literature course material and exams. She also teaches Law and Philosophy to our students in high school and at the university level.
